Brisbane residents woke up to find the city blanketed in fog this morning.

The thick cover forced the cancellation of ferries, while motorists were urged to exercise caution on the roads due to the low visibility.

The fog was spread across Queensland’s south-east, from the coast to Toowoomba, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

Dozens of flights into and out of the city were delayed, some by more than an hour. The backlog of flights caused added wait times for much of the day, according to the airport’s website.

Locals flocked to the Mount Coot-tha lookout to see the city’s skyscrapers barely peeking out from underneath the fog.

The fog eventually cleared by late morning. Some light fog - although not as thick as today's - is expected.
