Man rescued from Five Dock house fire by Sydney stabbing heroes

The firefighters who helped stop the deadly Sydney CBD stabbing rampage are again being hailed as heroes, after saving a man from his burning home.

Peter Vaughn, 75, was put in an induced coma after being rescued from the inferno, which destroyed his house at Five Dock, in Sydney's inner west.

Neighbours on West Street noticed the flames and smoke and called for help at 2am this morning.

They feared Mr Vaughn, 75, who lives alone at the property with his jack russell dog, Jasper, might be trapped inside.

But Mr Vaughn escaped from his bedroom to the kitchen, where he was found by firefighters, suffering minor burns and smoke inhalation.

The crew responsible for saving Mr Vaughn are the same firefighters who helped stop the Sydney stabbing attack two weeks ago, as they passed in their fire truck.

Gonzalo Herrera, said: "This is our role as we normally do it, very different to what we experienced a couple of weeks ago."

Mr Vaughn's daughters, Sarah and Rhonda, have found their dad's dog after a search.

The jack russell pet was the last thing Mr Vaughn had asked about before he was placed in an induced coma at Royal North Shore Hospital.

The blaze was considered especially dangerous due to a large amount of clutter that fuelled the fire and blocked the fire crew's path in the house.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.
