Fisherman drowns after falling into rough waters off Melbourne pier

A fisherman has drowned after falling off a Melbourne pier and into rough waters overnight.

Police said his body was discovered in water at Mordialloc Pier just off Beach Road about 3am today.

The man is believed to have been fishing when he fell into the water.

Authorities said other men came to his aid but were unable to reach him.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
