First asylum seekers settled on Nauru

The first asylum seekers on Nauru to get refugee visas since the detention centre's reopening are settling into their new island homes.

An Iranian mother, daughter and son, and a group of four single men are the first people to have been granted refugee status since Australia reopened the processing centre on Nauru in 2012.

The Nauru government handed down 20 refugee status determinations on Tuesday, with more due on Thursday.

The tiny island nation has set up a `buddy system' to help refugees adjust to island life, while local groups are organising barbecues and cooking classes to welcome their newest members.

Nauru Justice Minister David Adeang said he was confident refugees will find peace and fulfilment in his country.

"We hope they will enjoy our hospitality and friendship," he said in a statement on Wednesday.
