Firefighters rush to UTS - again

Fire trucks have descended on the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), again.

A handful of people were forced out of a UTS building on Thursday afternoon after smoke on campus set off alarms.

Fire & Rescue NSW spokesman Ian Krimmer said firefighters were ventilating a small room in which tradespeople had been working.

"It's just a small amount of smoke in one utility room," Superintendent Krimmer said.

"There's no active fire that we've been able to locate."

It's the third evacuation at the university in 18 months.

Last October, the bomb squad had to be called in after vials of potentially explosive acid were discovered and the previous year UTS construction workers were sent running when a fire erupted in a crane and sent the machine's arm crashing into nearby buildings.

Students appeared to be amused, not alarmed, by the latest scare.

One Twitter user posted a picture of fire crews with the caption: "Good job UTS. 4 fire trucks. What did we catch on fire this time", while another wrote: "is UTS ever not on fire?"
