Brisbane homes flood after sinkhole forms

Residents of a suburban Brisbane street have told of how they awoke to their homes and backyards being flooded after a burst water main created a large sinkhole this morning.

Emergency and construction crews have spent most of Monday morning clearing debris and attempting repairs at Juliette Street at Greenslopes, southeast of the city's CBD.

At one point a Queensland Fire and Emergency Services truck became stuck in the sinkhole after part of the road caved in. Crews have since been able to free the vehicle.

Resident Dan Whitty said he woke up around 4am to what he thought was the sound of rain.

"I looked out into the backyard and saw about half a metre of water flowing through," Mr Whitty said.

"We got knocked on the door by the fire bridge telling us that all the houses down the street have been flooded."

"We're lucky it only damaged our fences a bit, though a bit sorry for the neighbours as they've got more extensive damage … they'll have a bit of cleaning up to do."

"A similar thing happened a few years ago, with the same result … only a few metres from where (this morning) happened," Mr Whitty added.

Urban Utilities told 9News that it could take some time to figure out what exactly caused the pipe to burst but has suggested it could have something to do with the region's recent cold snap.
