Firefighters contain western Sydney fire as total fire ban announced

A fire in western Sydney is now under control after threatening multiple homes as firefighters battled the blaze among strong winds.

Approximately 30 homes were under threat, their back fences only metres from a creek authorities fought to prevent the fire from jumping.

Wind speeds of up to 50km/h were reported in the area as firefighters battled the blaze.

A water-bombing helicopter helped to bring the flames under control with the help of crews on the ground. 

The blaze has led to fire concerns for Sydney with temperatures as high as 38 degrees predicted for tomorrow and a dry, windy day expected. 

A total fire ban has been announced for eight areas across New South Wales, the Southern Slopes, Northern Riverina, Eastern Riverina, Illawarra/Shoalhaven area, Southern Ranges, Southern Riverina, the Lower Central Plains and in the ACT.
