Lucky escape for elderly man after large Brisbane home goes up in flames

A grand country homestead in Brisbane was destroyed by a blaze today before firefighters had a chance to combat the inferno.

The home on Tidwell Street in Mount Mee went up in flames around midday, with a neighbour assisting the owner’s elderly father out of the house.

The man was warming himself by an open fire in the home, however it is unclear how the blaze started.

A spokesman for the Queensland Fire Service told 9NEWS residents had to remain vigilant.

“We do get a lot more house fires in winter,” he said.

The fire was brought under control by 1pm, but nothing from the home was salvageable.

A spokesperson for the owner’s family told 9NEWS they were devastated but grateful nobody had been injured.

The combination of intense westerly winds and possibly embers from the blaze sparked a nearby grass fire, and a few kilometres away a shed was destroyed when a blaze broke out.

Bottles of chemicals in the shed caught alight and the structure exploded.

In the past week, at least another three homes in the south-east of the state have been destroyed by fires.

Earlier in the week, Logan House Fire Support Network spokesman Louie Naumovski said residents had to remain vigilant.

“Parents have to talk to their children, teach them about fire safety, not to play with matches, or lighters,” he told 9NEWS.
