Fire crews battle huge out of control bushfire east of Perth

Emergency crews have battled a huge fire burning on three fronts east of Perth tonight.

The blaze forced the closure of the Great Southern Highway and the evacuation of the BGC quarry.

Firefighters hoped to tackle the blaze head-on as it burned towards them in an easterly direction.

At least 50ha have already been burnt and spotfires have caused havoc for crews on the ground.

The Great Southern Highway is closed between The Lakes Roadhouse and Wariin Road at Mundaring and residents have been advised to avoid the area.

There is no immediate threat to homes but heavy smoke is blanketing the area.
