Firefighters are hoping to use drones to uncover the cause of a blaze that tore through a warehouse in inner city Melbourne.

The two-storey warehouse was fully engulfed, with fears the fire damaged an adjoining property as well.

Up to 80 firefighters were deployed to the scene at the height of the blaze, which was brought under control shortly after 5am, after erupting earlier this morning on Doonside Street.

Parts of neighbouring Burnley Street have also been closed, with firefighters warning the closures are likely to remain in place for some hours.

The cause of the major fire is not yet known, but firefighters have begun deploying drones to explore the gutted building's interior.

It's not yet known whether or not the blaze was suspicious.
