Australians who break federal laws will face higher fines from July 1 under proposed new laws.

Justice Minister Michael Keenan introduced a bill that increases the penalty unit - used by courts to calculate fines - for Commonwealth offences from $180 to $210.

The base rate will then increase with inflation every three years from July 2020.
