Fey and Poehler's North Korea jokes mocked for being a bit racist

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler have been mocked on Twitter for being a bit racist with their stereotypical depiction of a hardened North Korean military woman.

The hosts had a dig at the "biggest story in Hollywood this year" with former comedian Margaret Cho — a Korean-American actress — playing a stoic North Korean general and magazine contributor.

"Tonight we celebrate all the great television shows that we know and love along with all the movies North Korea was ok with," Fey quipped.

Poehler followed, saying: "The biggest story in Hollywood this year was when North Korea threatened an attack if Sony Pictures released The Interview, forcing us all to pretend we wanted to see it."

"North Korea referred to The Interview as absolutely intolerable and a wanton act of terror," Fey joked, adding: "Even more amazing, not the worst review the movie got."

The pair picked up the joke later when Margaret Cho appeared as the Korean general and "contributor to Movies Wow Magazine, dressed in North Korean khaki.

Cho, was playing a rehash of her "Korean mother" character, was not happy with the night's entertainment.

"You no have thousand baby playing guitar at the same time … you no have Denis Rodman, no basketball at all," Cho said.

There were some on Twitter who saw the act as similar to a minstrel show, with Cho mocking Asian stereotypes.

But there were far more who got their kicks out of it, seeing Cho's performance with some seeing it as mocking the Hermit Kingdom's isolated regime.
