Home destroyed in Ferntree Gully fire

A home has been gutted by a massive fire that ripped through a property east of Melbourne.

Images from the 9NEWS helicopter showed thick black smoke pouring from The Avenue home in Ferntree Gully just after 11am.

No one was injured in the blaze.

It took around an hour to bring the flames at the empty property under control.

Fire investigators continue to work to determine a cause.

The fire also spread to a nearby home but did not sustain as severe damage.
