Feminist leaders to keep tampon tax

Both the prime minister and the opposition leader say they're feminist, but are shying away from a sensitive issue for women - the tampon tax.

Asked on Saturday if as a feminist he supports removing the 10 per cent tax on tampons, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull responded that he will not be changing the GST.

The statement means Mr Turnbull is on a unity ticket with Opposition Leader Bill Shorten, who firmly ruled out any changes after initially seeming open to a change.

Women are campaigning for the removal of GST on female sanitary items, arguing there is a double standard as condoms and lubricants are excluded from the tax.
