Two female students from University of Melbourne brutally bashed in CBD

City leaders have unleashed their disgust over a vicious attack that saw two female international students from the University of Melbourne brutally bashed in a CBD street this week.

Victoria Police confirmed two women were walking along Elizabeth Street about 5.30pm on Wednesday when they were verbally abused and physically assaulted by two unknown female offenders.

The shocking footage shared online yesterday showed one female student being repeatedly assaulted, before being kicked to the ground by another woman.

A group of six people were displayed in the video, with one man heard calling "stop" multiple times while the student was bashed.

University of Melbourne Vice-Chancellor Duncan Maskell blasted the attack on the students, labelling it as a "disgrace". He said the university was providing support to the victims.

"This is a disgusting and unprovoked attack on two of our female students," he said.

"There is no place for violence in a modern, future-facing society like Australia. These senseless and vicious attacks on two young women must never be tolerated in our community. The people who did this are a disgrace.

"Police are investigating the assault and I very strongly urge anyone with any information about the attackers to contact them. They must be caught and dealt with using the full force of the law."

The victims received minor injuries and they reported the attack to police.

Lord Mayor Sally Capp also expressed her disgust over the brutal assault.

"I am appalled by the disgraceful attack on two young students from the University of Melbourne this week in the CBD," she said.

"The violence displayed is completely unacceptable. It does not reflect the values that Melburnians stand for or the behaviour we expect in our city.

"Melbourne is a caring and inclusive city that welcomes people from all over the world to live and study here. Our diversity is one of the great strengths of our community and violence, abuse or harassment will not be tolerated.

"During the COVID-19 pandemic it is more important than ever to stick together and lend a hand to those who need it."

The first female offender is described as caucasian in appearance, about 20-years-old and approximately 150cm tall, with a skinny build and shoulder-length brown hair.

She was wearing a dark top with a light-coloured skirt.

The second female offender was wearing a pink jacket. She is described as similar in age and caucasian with shoulder-length blonde hair.

During the assault, one of the victim's Air Pods were dropped and stolen by a man who was in the vicinity, but not involved in the attack.

The man is perceived as caucasian, with a solid build and approximately 175cm tall.

He was wearing a black puffer jacket and black backpack.

The two female offenders are yet to be located and the investigation remains ongoing.
