A female teacher in South Australia has been suspended after allegedly having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student.

A close relative of the schoolboy alerted authorities of the alleged relationship between the pair in the southeast of the state, the Advertiser reports.

The pupil was not being directly taught by the teacher at the time.

The legal age of consent in South Australia is 17 years, but if a person is in a position of authority, the younger person must be 18 years or older.

Police and the Education and Child Development Department are investigating the claims.

The teacher could face up to 10 years jail if found guilty of unlawful sexual intercourse with a student.
