Federal government backbencher Sarah Henderson has apologised after she was caught using her mobile phone while driving in Geelong last night.

A photo of the Corangamite MP looking at her phone while behind the wheel of a four-wheel drive covered with her name was snapped on the Surf Coast Highway yesterday.

Ms Henderson won the marginal seat for the Liberal Party in 2013 following a career as an award-winning journalist and lawyer.

Today she issued a short statement to the Herald Sun, admitting it was "wrong" and an "error of judgement".

"Last night, while driving, I looked at my phone. This was obviously the wrong thing to do and I apologise for this error of judgment," the statement said.

It comes just days after Opposition Leader Bill Shorten was fined and forced to apologise for texting and driving.

Police allegedly issued Mr Shorten with a $445 fine and docked him four demerit points after the incident was revealed.
