Opposition Leader Peter Dutton announced the Coalition will chip in more and get it done faster, but the Albanese government insists money has already been put aside to see it through.
The Coalition has pledged $840 million towards the $1 billion bypass if elected next month, claiming it would divert 60 per cent of heavy vehicles away from suburbs.

"The money's on the table now, it starts this year," Dutton said.
"We can work closely with the South Australian government."
Federal Labor, meanwhile, has already allocated $500 million, although Anthony Albanese's state counterpart says he wouldn't turn down extra funds.
"We would always welcome better than a 50/50 split. This is a national highway project. It's not a local metropolitan road," Premier Peter Malinauskas said.
Locals hope the project will improve road safety, but acknowledge that cost of living concerns are likely to take precedence in the upcoming election.
Residents are concerned about the ongoing safety risks and the impact of heavy traffic on their lives.
"It's not safe for pedestrians crossing," said Anita Derbali, a local business owner.
"There's been a lot of accidents on Portrush Road."
