In less than three months' time, the Prime Minister will head to the Governor General and start the firing gun on a federal election campaign.

Already, MP's and candidates have begun hitting the hustings to win voter support, but in more than a dozen New South Wales seats, the Liberals are yet to settle on candidates.

Insiders admit different factions within the party are bickering over contenders for crucial seats.

These include Dobell (1.5 per cent), Eden-Monaro (0.8 per cent), Parramatta (3.5 per cent), Warringah (7.2 per cent), Bennelong (6.9 per cent) and Hughes (9.8 per cent).

The infighting has also led to threats of pre-selection challenges to sitting MP's, including ministers Alex Hawke and Sussan Ley and backbencher Trent Zimmerman.

Scott Morrison voiced his frustration on 2GB Radio this morning, calling out his own state branch of the Liberal Party for playing "childish games" with pre-selection contests.

"Those playing games within the NSW Liberal party organisation need to ensure they focus on winning the election for the good of the Australian people and forget their factional rubbish."

He flagged a possible intervention by the federal office, meaning they would take control of the candidate selection process from the state executive.
