Julie Bishop joins Chris Uhlmann for campaign carpool karaoke

Carpool karaoke has seen some of the world's biggest stars sing it out behind the wheel with US TV host James Corden and with our federal election looming on Saturday, Nine political editor Chris Uhlmann sensed an opportunity.

He joined former foreign minister, deputy Liberal leader and retiring MP Julie Bishop for a spin through Sydney ahead of this weekend's poll.

The trip got off to a rocky start, which prompted this exchange:

Uhlmann: Where is the handbrake?

Bishop: Indicators on the right-hand side. Got it or hand it over. Come on, get out. I'm doing this.

Uhlmann: You would be used to that wouldn't you?

Bishop: Multi-tasking?

Uhlmann: Blokes who don't know where they're going.

The playlist was skewed to the 1970s and 80s – think ABBA, Queen, INXS and U2 - although up-and-coming Aussie singer Amy Shark also made cut.

She admitted leaving politics was a bittersweet feeling.

"I'm sad in some ways because I was there for 20 years," she said.

"In another way I'm relieved.

"I'm proud of what I achieved over 20 years particularly as foreign minister and now I'm just excited about the next phase in my life."

Uhlmann joked U2's "With Or Without You" shared some similarities with our political parties.

Uhlmann: It's the Coalition isn't it? It's the National Party: "I can't live with or without you". Come on, haven't they been a big pain in the bum for the last couple of years?

Bishop: We are stronger in coalition. Like a good marriage, you stick with it through thick and thin.

Ms Bishop said she "loved a bit of Michael Hutchence" and picked the INXS classic "Never Tear Us Apart".

"Can't read anything into that either," she said.

Ms Bishop weighed in on former leader Tony Abbott's fight to retain his seat of Warringah, where he is being challenged by high-profile independent Zali Steggall.

"It will be interesting to see how Warringah votes up the coast," she said.

"Manly and some of the beachside suburbs, they will be pretty strong Green activists and Zali Steggall may well be supported there but when you go further inland I think that Tony's vote may hold."

And her tip for Saturday?

"I think it will be a very close election. Very competitive," she said.

"I would never write the Coalition off.

"That would be a big mistake. So I'm confident."

As they returned, Ms Bishop left Uhlmann with one bit of advice about his driving: "Don't give up your day job."
