Federal Budget 2020: State by state - where the road and rail funding is going

The government has announced an expansion of its ongoing transport infrastructure pipeline, hoping to create 40,000 more jobs.

Tonight’s federal budget reported that since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the government had announced an additional $14 billion of investment in “new and accelerated” infrastructure projects over the next four years.

On a smaller scale, the budget announced an extra $3 billion would go towards shovel-ready projects, building on the $2 billion announced since May 2020.

This extra funding would include $2 billion to deliver road safety projects as well as $1 billion of funding for the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program, on top of the $500 million already announced.

WINNERS AND LOSERS: Who gained and who didn't in the 2020 budget

Funding will be provided to state and local governments on a "use it or lose it" basis, with unused funding for road safety projects to be reallocated to states and territories that have successfully deployed their previous allocations. 

Here's where that funding is going so far:

New South Wales

A total of $451 million will be allocated to New South Wales including:

• $120 million for pinch points
• $191 million to fix local roads
• $140 million for targeted safety works

Victoria

Victoria will receive $320.3 million in funding, including:

• An additional $178.2 million for regional rail revival projects
• $70.6 million for the Princes Highway East
• $71.5 million for targeted safety works 

Queensland

The $324.3 million for Queensland will include:

• $126.4 million for a regional economic enabling fund
• $120 million for targeted safety works

Western Australia

A total of $176 million in Western Australia will be used on projects including:

• $80 million for a regional state road safety improvement program
• $68 million for the Bussell Highway Duplication
• $16.0 million for Exmouth Roads 

South Australia

A total of $115.6 million in funding for South Australia will include:

• $41.6 million for a regional road network package
• $12 million for the Heysen Tunnel refit
• $47.6 million for targeted safety works

Tasmania

There was $34.3 million to Tasmania, including:

• $8 million for state road network enhancements
• $12.3 million for targeted safety works 

Northern Territory

Funding of $40.4 million was allocated the Northern Territory, including $26.8 million for targeted safety works. 

Australian Capital Territory

The government sent $17.6 million of funding to the Australian Capital Territory, including $6 million for the new Mitchell Light Rail Stop.

There will also be $500 million provided Australia-wide over two years to support local councils to maintain and deliver social infrastructure, improve road safety and bolster the resilience of our local road networks.
