A parliamentary inquiry will investigate foreign bribery in the wake of revelations of corruption by FIFA officials during the World Cup bidding process.

Independent senator Nick Xenophon and Palmer United's Dio Wang on Wednesday won Senate support to refer overseas corruption to a Senate committee.

The committee - which will report by July next year - will look at possible improvements to federal laws and Australia's obligations under international conventions.
