Fed budget hits Vic coalition: premier

The federal budget is affecting the coalition's chances of victory in November's Victorian election, Premier Denis Napthine says.

An Age/Nielsen poll published on Thursday found the government would be defeated soundly if an election was held now, with Labor leading the coalition 59-41 per cent on a two-party preferred basis.

Dr Napthine blamed the tough federal budget.

"It's not popular in Victoria, which has a flow-on effect to the Liberal Party brand," Dr Napthine told Fairfax Radio on Friday.

"It was a tough federal budget that has implications for Victoria and I spoke up on behalf of Victorians with regard to the decisions they made to withdraw from, for example, the concessions national partnership (and) some of the other health partnerships.

"I think the perception is that it's not popular in the community but what the people of Victoria need to know is that we of Victoria will fight for Victoria."

The election will take place on November 29.
