Faulty fire hydrant floods Melbourne street

A street in Melbourne’s west was turned into a lake overnight after a faulty fire hydrant burst.

Emergency services were called to Hoppers Crossing at 6pm after the broken hydrant, on the corner of Cleveland Drive and Coniston Place, began to shoot water four metres into the air.

Residents in the street told 9NEWS the broken hydrant was “a novelty” at first, but they quickly became concerned for their homes as water rushed down the street and into a cul-de-sac.

Several homes were inundated with water, with one man’s garage under 15cm of water.

One of the street's residents, Ian Urch, said blocked drains made the situation much worse.

“All the drains in the court were blocked and the water started to rise quite quickly,” he said.

“One house was in danger pretty quickly.”

Residents were angry it took emergency crews two hours to respond to calls for help, and after they arrived it was another hour before they could stem the flow of water.

“They couldn’t find the valve to turn it off,” Mr Urch said.

The water flowing from the hydrant was not stopped until 10pm, and it wasn’t until midnight that water began to drain out of properties.

This morning crews are at the site using machinery to drain the water from the street.
