Father fights back against would-be thieves during home invasion in Melbourne

A father has fought back against three masked robbers who targeted his family home in Pakenham, in Melbourne's south-east, last night.

The intruders stormed Aaron and Sonia Gallagher’s home on Balmoral Way just after 11.30pm, and immediately began making threats.

"'Give me the keys… give me the f------ keys'," Mr Gallagher recalled one skull mask-wearing robber shouting.  

Fearing for the safety of his three daughters and wife, Mr Gallagher decided to take action.

"I’ve grabbed all three and rushed them towards the door," he told 9NEWS.

In the struggle, Mr Gallagher was struck over the back of the head with a chain.

He claims he then stared at the intruders, causing them to flee.

"Their eyes went white and they ran," he said.

The offenders were last seen driving away in a black Suzuki Swift.

Two of the intruders are described as having a Caucasian appearance, while the other is believed to be African in appearance.

Forensic police returned to the home this morning to gather evidence.

Initial investigations have revealed the robbers gained access to the property through the front door, which was unlocked after a family friend left earlier in the evening.

Police have acknowledged Mr Gallagher's efforts to protect his family.
