Farmers will be given a chance to have their say on cutting red tape in the agricultural sector through a Productivity Commission inquiry.

Treasurer Scott Morrison and Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce on Friday announced the terms of reference for the inquiry, which is due to report within nine months.

The commission will nominate priority areas where regulations in the sector can be removed or reduced to help improve productivity for farm businesses.
