Family law head won't condemn Hanson

The head of the government's family violence inquiry has refused to condemn One Nation senator Pauline Hanson's claims women made up domestic violence allegations.

Kevin Andrews, who will chair a federal parliamentary inquiry into Australia's family law system, told the ABC on Tuesday he needed to remain "impartial".

Last week, Ms Hanson made widely condemned claims women were routinely lying to win custody disputes in the Family Court.

But the veteran conservative MP repeatedly refused to criticise Ms Hanson on Tuesday night, saying it would compromise his ability to impartially lead the inquiry.

"If I start providing commentary on what anybody says ... I think that then undermines my ability to try and chair this committee in a way which everybody coming before it can feel confident that they'll be heard," Mr Andrews said.

When told women's groups didn't feel comfortable approaching the inquiry because of Ms Hanson's comments, Mr Andrews told the ABC the inquiry proceedings would be conducted in a "appropriate, impartial and civil manner".

"I will be saying to all committee members, that this is a very sensitive issue, and we have to treat it accordingly," Mr Andrews said.

"It's very important for me as the chair, not only to be impartial, which I intend to be, but to be seen as being impartial."

Mr Andrews' comments comes as Australia's peak legal body called for politicians to undergo domestic violence awareness training before the inquiry.

The Law Council of Australia also criticised Ms Hanson's fellow One Nation senator, Malcolm Roberts, for implying the family law system was causing men to be violent.

Ms Hanson has been actively campaigning for the inquiry and said there was no "bargaining chip" offered by the government when it announced it last week.

It comes just months after a review by the Australian Law Reform Commission and a separate parliamentary inquiry into the family courts two years ago.
