‘I got a sister!’ Family finally gets a new addition after miscarriages and failed adoptions

A US family is using their touching story of adoption to encourage others going through the emotionally taxing process to never give up. 

After the trauma of four miscarriages, Anita and Jim Bojan decided to give adoption a chance, and their daughter Avi the younger sibling she always wanted.

Four years ago, the couple were slated to adopt a pregnant woman’s baby but the adoption heartbreakingly fell through when the baby’s birth mother had a change of heart after breastfeeding the child.

“I was the one to cut the umbilical cord, first to hold her and Jim and I went through jaundice with her,” Ms Bojan said.

The sadness of the event was compacted when they had to break the news to their five-year-old daughter.

When the family took a second chance at adoption in March 2013, with a baby called Aerie, they were left heartbroken once more when the child’s mother said she wanted her back.

After three days of caring for Aerie as their own, they were forced to hand her back, along with her clothes, books and toys.

However, in a twist of fate three months later, Ms Bojan received a text from Aerie’s mother saying that the baby had fallen ill and she had lost her job trying to care for her, and signed over her parental rights to the Bojans.

“Aerie has added so much to our family,” Ms Bojan told LittleThings.

“Dad calls her ‘Sweet Potato’ and I call her ‘My Little Pistol.’”

“When Avi is dropped off at dance class, Aerie is continuously asking, ‘Where is Avi?’ When dance is over and she comes to the door, Aerie runs over to her so excited to see her. Their friendship keeps growing daily.”

Avi’s reaction to the news she was getting a little sister was posted on YouTube, with Avi heard saying “Yes, I got a sister!”  

Despite the roller-coaster journey, the Bojan’s have offered valuable advice to other family’s hoping to adopt.

“Develop a thick skin and do not let anyone convince you to stop pursuing your dream.

“Agencies will try to have you stop after a certain time frame, families will say this is too hard for you and friends will try to add their thoughts, too. If you want it bad enough, it will happen,” Ms Bojan said.
