Family of Cairns nurse Sue Ellen Kovack shares joke as she awaits Ebola diagnosis

The sister of Cairns nurse Sue Ellen Kovack has joked on Facebook about her facing a possible Ebola diagnosis this morning.

As the 57-year-old, who recently returned from working in West Africa, remains under quarantine awaiting her fate, her sister shared online a photo of her wearing an "old-fashioned HAZMAT suit".

"Throwback Thursday ... Little Sis: is that some kind of old-fashioned HAZMAT suit?" Lisa Kovack Campanella posted under a photo of her sister as a child wearing white pyjamas and a vintage plastic hairdryer.

Ms Kovack is said to be in good spirits after admitting herself to Cairns Hospital yesterday afternoon, where she is in isolation awaiting urgent blood test results.

She is suspected of having contracted Ebola while working as a nurse for a Red Cross hospital in Kenema, in Sierra Leone, last month, returning to Cairns on Sunday before she came down with a fever yesterday.

On her Facebook page, Ms Kovack has candidly shared many photos of her risky work with patients in West Africa, including one where she is holding the blood tests of her camp's "first Ebola survivor".

"Hopefully this 11-year-old will be discharged tomorrow if proven Ebola free," she wrote on September 23.

"Scary moment but went smoothly. A pivotal moment for sure in my career xx."

Numerous other photos show Ms Kovack dressed in HAZMAT suits, usually grinning with positivity as she works in the strictly-controlled area.

Her page is littered with well-wishes and praise for her work.

"Your beautiful eyes are still shinning," friend Penny Fox wrote under a photo of Ms Kovack in a HAZMAT suit.

"I'm really proud of you for the work you're doing out there. Not many people would volunteer their time to do what you're doing and I find that amazing," Scott Daniels wrote, while her sister posted: "Sooooo wonderful to see your smile. Says it all."

In one photo, Ms Kovack and another volunteer carry what appears to be a covered stretcher while an unprotected man, most likely an Ebola patient, sits in the background.

"No likes here," the nurse's sister commented.

Ms Kovack has been under self-imposed quarantine since returning home on Tuesday, a standard procedure for the duration of the disease's incubation period.

Blood samples were yesterday rushed to laboratories in Brisbane, where Queensland Chief Health Officer Jeanette Young said results were expected early this morning.
