Toddler killed by reversing ute driven by dad

A Queensland father was behind the wheel of the ute that fatally struck his three-year-old boy yesterday, it has been revealed.

The four-wheel drive with a box trailer was reversing out of driveway in Samford Valley, in the Moreton Bay region, when the accident occurred about 5.20pm.

Police and paramedics arrived on the scene shortly after, however the boy could not be revived.

Queensland Police spokesman Marcus Cryer said the three-year-old's family were struggling to come to terms with the loss.

"They're extremely distraught – as one would be, losing a child in Christmas," he said.

9News reporter Nat Wallace said there was little attending emergency services crews could do but console each other.

"You know when a police officer kindly comes out of his way to let us know what has happened, and indeed let everyone at home know what's happening at the end of in this quiet street in Samford Valley, and starts crying, you start to get a picture of just how horrible and heartbreaking it is up there," Wallace said.

The Forensic Crash Unit is now investigating.
