Families could promote cashless welfare

Families who have benefited from the cashless welfare card trial should be enlisted to help sell the policy, coalition MPs say.

The controversial trial got "vigorous" support during a coalition party room meeting on Tuesday, with MPs arguing for it to be expanded.

One MP said rather than rely on politicians to tell the community about the policy, families who benefited from cashless debit cards should be talking about the impact it made on their lives.

In April, Malcolm Turnbull said his visit to Kalgoorlie in September to promote the expansion of the cards to the WA Goldfields had "moved" him.

"I would encourage you to go there, as I did, and sit down with the community and listen to the heartfelt stories about the importance of that cashless card and the way it saves families, it saves lives," he told reporters in April.
