Police are hunting for a man who disguised himself as a police officer in a violent attempt to steal cash from a driver in Melbourne’s north.

It’s believed a 25-year-old man was driving a grey ute west on Wood Street, Preston, when he noticed a dark Holden Commodore following him.

Soon after, the Commodore activated imitation police lights, prompting the ute driver to pull over.

The offender then approached the 25-year-old and demanded he hand over cash, before forcing him from his vehicle.

Two further men then surrounded the ute, and then began punching the victim on the ground.

He suffered bruising and cuts to his face.

Today detectives have released an image of a suspect, who is described as being Caucasian, aged in his mid-30s and is tall with a muscular build.

He has spiky blonde hair and a piercing on his right eyebrow.

Investigations are ongoing into the June 9 incident, which unfolded about midday.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
