An elderly woman crossing the road with her walker has died after being hit by a van in Sydney's west.

The 77-year-old was walking across Station Street in Fairfield Heights last night when she was struck by a Toyota Hiace van.

Emergency services found the woman seriously injured and paramedics commenced CPR, but she died at the scene.

A neighbour who witnessed the crash said she felt "sick".

"I feel sad because I saw it," the woman told 9News.

"She didn't deserve to have such a terrible end".

The driver, a 44-year-old man, was not injured. He was arrested and taken to Fairfield Hospital for mandatory testing.

He was then taken to Fairfield Police Station by officers from the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit.

He was charged with dangerous driving occasioning death and negligent driving occasioning death; his licence was suspended on the spot.

The driver was refused bail to appear at Fairfield Local Court today.
