Failed Comm Games bidders back AG inquiry

Failed bidders for the 2018 Commonwealth Games ceremonies say an independent investigation is needed to remove serious doubts over the tender process.

The Gold Coast Games Corporation (GOLDOC) controversially awarded the opening and closing ceremonies to US company Jack Morton Worldwide (JMW).

The leaders of the three losing Australian companies have backed calls for Queensland's auditor-general to investigate the matter.

Commonwealth Games Minister Stirling Hinchliffe has already indicated he would support such an inquiry, which the group says is needed to restore public confidence in the tender process and ensure the best ceremonies team is appointed.

"We welcome and are encouraged by the minister's support for an investigation by the auditor-general and his office," they said in a joint statement.

"We believe this will help to remove serious concerns and doubts surrounding the tender process for the ceremonies."

Concerns remain over the involvement of former JMW employees Mik Auckland and Celia Smith as technical advisers to the GOLDOC bid evaluation committee.

The pair, who have also worked for, or collaborated with, the head figures of the unsuccessful bid teams, have strenuously denied claims of bias.

Key findings from a probity audit into the bid process were tabled in Queensland Parliament earlier this month.

While the audit stated there was no conflict of interest, it conceded there was the potential for a perception of a conflict of interest.

Mr Hinchliffe said he was satisfied the process was fair and in accordance with government principles but chastised GOLDOC over poor communication with the failed bidders.

He also said he would welcome and assist if the auditor-general chose to investigate.

The leaders of the three failed bidders said no stone should be left unturned in ensuring all steps were taken to ensure the best qualified tendering company was recruited.

"We are confident that Australia has the creative talent and production capability to do Australia and the Gold Coast proud on the world stage at the ceremonies for the 2018 Commonwealth Games," they added.
