Eyeliners containing lead pulled from shelves

A range of eyeliners sold in Australia have been recalled by the consumer watchdog after being found to contain high levels of lead.

Hashmi Kajal, Hashmi Tube, Hashmi Surma and Hashmi Kohl Aswad powdered eyeliners produced by Oasis Corporation are the defective products, the ACCC said in a press release.

The eyeliners were sold up until July 31 this year at specialist Indian and Pakistani stores in New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Queensland and the ACT.

Consumers are advised to stop using the product immediately and seek medical advice. The product can be returned to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Single exposure to lead can cause both short-term and long-term poisoning, with acute symptoms including muscle pain, fatigue, abdominal pain, headache, nausea or vomiting, seizures and can lead to a coma.

The fresh recall comes just two months after three Sydney children fell ill after using the imported liner.
