Extra charge over Daniel Christie assault

Another assault charge has been laid against Shaun McNeil, the man accused of seriously assaulting Daniel Christie in an attack on New Year's Eve.

With Mr Christie's condition in St Vincent's Hospital still listed as critical on Monday, 25-year-old McNeil appeared via videolink in Central Local Court.

He has been charged with assaulting a fifth victim in Kings Cross on New Year's Eve, the court was told.

He now faces five charges - assault occasioning grievous bodily harm, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and three counts of common assault.

According to facts previously tendered in court, McNeil had just left the Punchbowl bar in Kings Cross with his girlfriend last Tuesday when he got into a verbal altercation with three young men.

He allegedly struck all three before attacking Mr Christie and his brother, Peter, when the other young men tried to hide behind them.

McNeil, a labourer, allegedly boasted that he was a mixed martial arts fighter before punching Mr Christie in the face as he shielded the others.

He also allegedly split Peter Christie's lip.

McNeil told police that the first group of young men was trying to sell him drugs and he had acted to protect his girlfriend.

He was unable to explain his actions towards the Christies, the facts said.

He was refused bail at Parramatta Bail Court on New Year's Day and did not apply for it on Monday.

He said little during his appearance, which was attended by his mother, Sharon McCormack.

Mr Christie remains in a coma at St Vincent's Hospital. His family said in a statement last week that their lives have been turned upside down by the attack.

McNeil's case will return to court on March 4.
