A climate protest caused chaos in Melbourne after blocking a major freeway exit during peak hour.

Climate activists blocked off the Kings Way inbound exit ramp from the West Gate Freeway at about 8.30am.

Police were on the scene and had reopened one lane by about 9.30am, but activists remained.

One person appeared to be locked onto a van blocking the road with a bike chain.

Traffic slowed to a crawl and Melbourne residents have been warned there is more to come.

The protest has since been cleared and traffic is flowing again, 3AW has reported.

Initially reported to be Extinction Rebellion activists, the group's van had a banner hanging off it emblazoned with "Scientist Rebellion", which is an offshoot that functions within the larger Extinction Rebellion framework.

The group has a three-day disruption planned for the CBD, with people warned to be alert and expect delays.
