WHAT IS APEC?

A forum of 21 nations which aims to create a seamless regional economy. APEC partners account for more than two-thirds of Australia's trade in goods and services.

WHICH NATIONS ARE MEMBERS?

Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Chile, People's Republic of China, Hong Kong, China, Indonesia, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peru, The Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Chinese Taipei, Thailand, United States of America and Vietnam.

WHAT WILL MALCOLM TURNBULL DO?

* Meet with leaders he hasn't met in upcoming visits to Jakarta and Berlin and at the G20 summit in Turkey.

* Likely to take part in breakout meeting of Trans-Pacific Partnership country leaders to finalise the pact before parliamentary ratification.

* Discuss APEC issues such as a regional digital economy, tariff cuts for renewable energy products and an APEC trade zone.

WHAT'S IT WORTH?

* Australia's goods and services exports to the APEC region were valued at $260.4 billion in 2014.

* China accounted for $98.2 billion of the exports, while Japan made up $50.2 billion.
