EXP: How refugees will be resettled here
HOW THE RESETTLEMENT PROCESS WORKS
* Australian immigration officials have a base in Dubai and set up an office in Oman.
* The UN High Commissioner for Refugees has a list of thousands of registered people in camps across Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey.
* Australian and UNHCR officials will identify 12,000 women, children and families from persecuted ethnic and religious minorities who have no prospect of safely returning home.
* UNHCR refers prospective applicants to the immigration department.
* Applicants are interviewed by Australian officials via video conference, checks are done on character and national security, and fingerprints and a photo are taken.
* Applicants complete an "Australian values statement" which certifies an understanding of social values such as freedom of religion and respect for the law.
* When they are granted settlement, they undergo a "cultural orientation" program - dealing with topics from how to find a job to adjusting to Australian life - and more health checks.
* On arrival in Australia they are given a case manager, accommodation, Centrelink and Medicare support.
