Exclusive: Boy, 10, nearly loses leg after being hit by Melbourne bus

A 10-year-old Melbourne boy who was hit by a bus while running home is appealing to others to pay attention while crossing the road.

Shocking video obtained by 9News shows Charlee Jones sprinting to beat the bus on a Wednesday afternoon last year.

The Year Five student attempts to cross Newbury Road in Craigieburn when he is clipped by the large vehicle.

While Charlee's head hit the bus first, it was his legs that bore the brunt of the impact; he was left with multiple fractures.

“I was screaming and lots of people were coming out wondering why I was screaming,” the student recalled.

His brother, Noah, wasn't far behind when he noticed the crash, and raced home to alert their mother.

“I basically pulled down a car, got in and told the person to drive to my house.”

The injured boy’s mother, Taylah, described the gruesome sight of her son’s “shredded right calf”.

“He’s a very lucky boy that he didn’t lose his leg.”

Charlee required three surgeries to repair his wounded limb, spending about a month in hospital.

“It was pretty terrifying,” he said.

While the 10-year-old is now back on his feet, he said the incident has left him nervous to walk to school.

“I have a new phobia of roads, I just feel scared when I run onto the road.”

Authorities said Charlee’s ordeal is a timely reminder for motorists with youngsters returning to school from next week, as children can be unpredictable.

“They’ve had the holidays off, they are excited to catch up with friends and may not be paying attention to motorists,” Acting Sergeant Jason Lane said.
