Fire rips through high-end Brisbane wedding venue, leaving one fighting for life

A massive fire has torn through multiple buildings in inner-city Brisbane, leaving one person fighting for life and collapsing the roof of a high-end wedding venue, leaving organisers rushing to organise backups.

More than a dozen fire crews battled the flames for hours on Hubert Street, Woolloongabba, as thick black smoke billowing into the air forced police to declare an emergency exclusion area taking in several surrounding streets, including the busy Stanley Street.

The fire started about 4.30pm yesterday, the emergency warning was issued about 40 minutes later and wasn't lifted until 10.45pm, police said.

Members of the public were asked to avoid the area, and those within the exclusion zone were asked to remain indoors.

Multiple buildings were damaged, including The Lussh wedding venue, the owners of which said the fire broke out next door.

"Well, this sucks. We are devastated by the events of this afternoon and extremely thankful that our team is safe," the venue posted on Instagram.

"Our hearts go out to our Woolloongabba community and all those affected by the fire that broke out from a neighbouring building earlier today."

The roof of the building caved in as firefighters fought to control the blaze.

The venue, which claims to be "Brisbane's best indoor-outdoor events venue", said it had a backup plan in place for couples and clients with upcoming events booked.

One person was taken to Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital with life-threatening airway burns.

When the Public Safety Preservation Act declaration was lifted last night, police said there was no ongoing threat to nearby properties and roads had reopened.
