Thieves have stolen a $200,000 excavator from a Melbourne work site in a brazen early morning heist.

Security vision captured the break in at a construction site on Leakes Road in Laverton North on Wednesday August 19.

The incident happened before opening, at 6.30am.

It's unclear whether one person was involved in the theft or more.

Victoria Police say the offender used a white 'cabin over truck' prime mover and low loader trailer to remove the 14 tonne Case CX145C excavator from the site.

The stolen equipment was last seen on the trailer travelling north bound on Fitzgerald Road.

Detectives have today released security vision of the incident and are appealing for anyone with information, or dash cam, to come forward.

Anyone who knows the whereabouts of the excavator or knows who is involved is urged to contact police.
