Error means Vics risk driving unlicensed

Thousands of Victorians are at risk of driving with expired licences after an administrative bungle meant renewal notices were not sent out.

Drivers whose licences expire between Wednesday and next Tuesday are affected by the error and some could become unlicensed from midnight on Wednesday.

VicRoads executive director of Registration and Licensing, Peter Welling, said VicRoads discovered late on Tuesday that up to 15,000 people, due to renew their licences during this period, had not received the normal renewal notice.

"We are asking drivers to urgently check when their licence is due to expire and if it is anytime between Wednesday and next Tuesday they must call VicRoads to arrange immediate payment of their licence," he said.

Mr Welling said VicRoads is in the process of contacting anyone affected by letter and through the media to warn them of the situation.

VicRoads has notified Victoria Police of this error and is working with them to address any impacts on licence holders, he said.

Mr Welling urged anyone whose licence expires over the period to call VicRoads on 13 11 71.
