Eric Bogle to move Gallipoli ceremony

The only thing more poignant than hearing "And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda" on Anzac Day will be Eric Bogle singing his famous ballad at Gallipoli.

So says Australian war historian Mat McLachlan, who has arranged for a crowd to hear Bogle in Turkey next month.

His battlefield tour business will host a ceremony for hundreds who missed out on tickets to the official dawn service at Anzac Cove.

Mr Bogle's rendition of "And the band played Waltzing Matilda" will be their version of the Last Post, he says.

"Eric has never been to Gallipoli," Mr McLachlan told AAP.

"There won't be a dry eye in the house when that occurs."

The alternative ceremony will be at a historic Turkish fort near Gallipoli, with veteran journalist Ray Martin as MC.

There will be a cauldron and flame, and a site to lay wreaths.

Scottish bag piper Ryan Gonsales will perform, and the official dawn service will be broadcast to the gathered crowd.

"It's going to be something very special for those lucky enough to be there, but also back in Australia as well," Mr McLachlan said.

"It's an opportunity for people to come together and realise why we have one of the best countries in the world, to just remember the sacrifice it took to get to where we are today."
