Actress Emma Watson has criticised what she says is a “lack of empathy” on social media after hundreds of explicit images of female celebrities were posted online.

The star took to Twitter to decry commentary by users amid concerns of "victim blaming".

“Even worse than seeing women's privacy violated on social media is reading the accompanying comments that show such a lack of empathy,” she wrote.

Ms Watson’s comments come after the images were leaked through notorious site 4chan on Sunday.

Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Upton, Kirsten Dunst and Australian pair Teresa Palmer and Yvonne Strahovski were among those affected.
