Police assaulted during Sydney brawl

A father-of-four has spent the night behind bars charged with assaulting police during a wild brawl in Sydney.

At about 3am yesterday, officers were called to Slide, a bar on Oxford Street in Surry Hills, Sydney after reports of a group of 15 people brawling.

Elyias Mariner allegedly punched an officer in the face while another officer was shoved to the ground.
The 30-year-old was capsicum sprayed and taken into custody.

He attended Central Local Court this morning charged with affray and assault police in the execution of duty.

“We don’t condone this violence at all,” Superintendent Craig Middleton told 9News.

“It was a very confronting scene for our officers to attend.”

Nine other men and one woman were arrested and charged over the assault. They were released on bail.

Mariner pleaded not guilty to the charges with his lawyer telling the court Mariner was “a bit angry” and “pushy” as a result of being sprayed with capsicum spray.

The judge granted him bail and he will be required to attend court again at a later date.

He has been blacklisted from the Surry Hills area.
