Taronga Zoo elephants enjoy mud bath as Sydney gets a soaking

An elephant calf at Taronga Zoo is making the most of Sydney's wet weather today with a frolic in the mud.

Two-year-old Asian elephant Jai Dee was captured happily rolling around in the mud and using his trunk to splash elephant-sized projectiles of the sludge onto himself 

Mum Pak Boon took a more relaxed approach, lying down in the muddy puddle for a good soaking.

The adorable clip was captured as damaging winds and heavy rainfall prompted severe weather warnings for much of Australia's south-east today.

Sydney is forecast to receive up to 10mm of rain amid chilly tops of 19C for Friday.

Elephants love frolicking in the rain and often show some incredibly unique behaviours when there is wet weather, according to their keepers at Taronga Zoo.

With the COVID-19 pandemic forcing Targona Zoo to close its doors to the public, the zoo has set up its own online television channels broadcasting the animals' behaviours live.

Animal enthusiasts can watch the elephants, along with other animals including the recently-added Asian small-clawed otters, on six livestreams on the zoo's website.
