Election 2016: LNP considers challenge of Labor's win in Herbert

The Liberal National Party is considering challenging Labor's 37-vote win in Herbert, after the result in the north Queensland seat was finalised yesterday.

Senior minister Steve Ciobo today said there were suggestions that more people than the winning margin missed out on the chance to vote.

"It's important that if we're going to compel Australians to turn out to vote that every Australian have the opportunity to do that," he told ABC radio.

Yesterday, the Australian Electoral Commission announced its recount of the seat had been completed and found that Labor’s Cathy O’Toole had won by 37 votes.

Herbert was the last House of Representatives seat to be finalised, and the result leaves Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull's coalition government with 76 seats – a majority of just one.

The LNP's Ewen Jones previously held the seat with a margin of just over six percent.
