Elderly woman killed on road crossing

An 83-year-old woman has died after being struck by a car while crossing a road in Sydney's south.

The woman was struck by a Hyundai stationwagon on the Kingsway near Banksia Road in Caringbah at about 11.40am.

Motorists and nearby residents attempted to help her, and paramedics arrived within three minutes but she died at the scene after sustaining a number of serious head injuries.

Witnesses said she had been crossing the road when a car came off a side street to turn onto the main road.

The 40-year-old female driver of the Hyundai was not injured but taken to Sutherland Hospital for mandatory testing.

Residents told 9NEWS the corner was an extremely dangerous one, with traffic lights too far away to ensure a safe crossing.

"I think the council needs to look at that road," one resident said.

"I know there's been a lot of complaints about it.

Police are urging witnesses to the incident to come forward.
