Elderly woman escapes Melbourne house fire

An elderly woman has escaped a house fire in Macleod last night that caused an estimated $200,000 worth of damage to the home.
More than 20 Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) firefighters arrived at the house on Somers Avenue at around 7.20pm after receiving multiple calls for assistance.
It took around 40 minutes to bring the blaze under control.
A spokesman for MFB said the double-storey house was “totally involved” in fire.
Station officer Matthew Green from MFB said the house was “well alight, particularly at the rear”.
“It was very close to the next-door neighbours, but thankfully the 94-year-old resident had evacuated herself,” Mr Green said.
“The house has been extensively damaged, but thankfully no damage to any residents.”
A specialist aerial appliance was deployed on scene to help crews bring the blaze under control.
